Based in Baghdad, Hamid Al-Saadi is the foremost performer of Iraqi Maqam music of his generation, and only living artist who has mastered the entire Maqam repertoire. Instability in Iraq has placed this musical tradition in danger of extinction. A repository of Iraq’s rich history, it is included on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Al-Saadi performs Maqam with Amir ElSaffar, renowned Iraqi-American composer, musician, and vocalist who fuses jazz and Arabic music.
